According to Urban Dictionary, JOMO is the "Joy of Missing Out." Simply defined, you're focused on what you're doing in the present now rather than on social media broadcasting or viewing what everyone else is doing. The inverse of FOMO, or the fear of missing out.
JOMO is defined as choosing what makes you happy and being deliberate about how you spend your time. It is being fully present without thinking about missing out on something or how it will appear on social media.
Since the pandemic, many of us have been suffering FOMO, or the fear of missing out, which has had an impact on our mental health. So, how do you deal?
1. DISCONNECT FROM TECHNOLOGY
Reduce your time spent on social media and schedule frequent times when you entirely detach from technology.
2. REFLECT ON HOW YOU SPEND YOUR TIME.
Take some time to reflect on how you spend your time and how it affects you. Be honest: are you doing things because they make you happy or because you are afraid of missing out?
3. BECOME MORE CONSCIOUS OF HOW YOU SPEND YOUR TIME.
Now take some time to consider what is essential to you and your happiness, as well as how you want to spend your time. What activities or events correspond to your objectives or priorities? Would you benefit from some alone time or rest?
4. REESTABLISH CONNECTION WITH PEOPLE
So much of our communication and relationship building happens online. Disconnect from technology and reconnect with others. Relationships are an important aspect of our happiness, therefore prioritize the individuals who make you happy.
5. BE MINDFUL AND PRESENT.
Learn how to be more mindful. Slowing down and becoming more present are two ways to cultivate JOMO. Bring your emotional and physical demands to the forefront of your mind and choose to be more present in your life.
6. SAYING NO IN PRACTICE
An apparent one, yet one that many people struggle with. Learn to say no without feeling guilty or fearful. Choose only what is absolutely required or provides you joy.
Embracing more JOMO in your life can provide you with numerous benefits such as increased balance, joy, and happiness.
